Sod Farm Equipment Operator / Truck Driver

Working under the Sod Farm Manager the equipment operator plants and harvests the sod crop at the direction of the estimator using heavy equipment such as a bobcat or skid steer loader.

Estimator (Nursery)

A turf or landscape estimator will work in conjunction with a commercial sod farm operation specializing in the knowledge of turf horticulture and product pricing or in other areas of nursery trades. The estimator will have a thorough knowledge of turf markets, soil and climate, water availability, equipment technology, and offer consultation on appropriate turf varieties.

Assistant Retail Sales Manager

Assistant managers are responsible for customer service, maintenance care and identification of plants, shrubs, and perennials, ordering, receiving, and organization of retail displays. Individuals will take direction from the Retail Sales Manager and must monitor and understand all aspects of the retail nursery operation, including: scheduling and hiring of workers in coordination with the manager, identification of plant pests and disease, and executing designated customer services.

Propagation Division Manager

Duties include making sure that the propagation needs of the nursery are met, providing plugs and liners to businesses, propagating and marketing perennials. Individuals will execute all aspects of the propagation division including growth, innovation within the industry, monitoring sales and marketing, supervising related work crews, and farm business management.

Field Manager & Foreperson

Job includes day to day supervision of workers (3 to 14 employees) and work schedules including shipping within a nursery or landscaping firm.

Sod Farm Worker

Workers perform a variety of routine chores under the direction of the turf farm manager or supervisor, including: rock picking, irrigation, fence line boundary preparation, installing base mesh, seeding, fertilizing and harvesting.

Nursery Worker & Order Processor

Duties include filling packing slips with quality plant material and other shipping duties, requires a general knowledge of plant identification, shrubs, and perennials including watering, planting, pruning, and customer service. Depending on the nursery may require fork lift or tractor operation.

Mushroom Grower

The mushroom grower performs the overall management and operational position on a mushroom farm, including some of the following tasks: overseeing and training mushroom harvesters and graders; employment scheduling and administration tasks; handling, disposing, and generating compost; handling and disposing wood waste product; managing water and soil effectively; controlling run-off; maintaining proper storage facilities for raw materials; performing pesticide application and integrated pest management programs; working in accordance with environmental guidelines prohibiting excessive smells, noises, and gaseous generation; and observing general housekeeping practices to minimize the impact of their operation.

Mushroom Harvester and Grader (General Labourer)

General labourer position would require loading product onto trucks, general equipment safety, maintenance and operation. May require compost turning, boiler operators ticket may be required and general maintenance duties. Harvesting mushrooms by hand and sorted into grades by size and quality.

General Farm Worker (Laying Operation / Hatchery)

Daily routines include feeding, watering, daily collection of hatching eggs and the overseeing of the breeding flock. Workers monitor feed inventory, maintain standards of efficiency and bio-security, maintain and update flock records and statistics, implement health programs, and are familiar with WHIMIS regulations.

Turkey Farm Technician

Will be responsible for all aspects of the turkey growing operation, including: operating, maintaining and repairing all poultry farm equipment, care of flock, checking water, feed, culling, record keeping, and reporting results.

Supervisor Turkey Breeder

The manager/supervisor works under the Director of Operations supervising all aspects of turkey hatching egg production. Job duties include implementing vaccination and health programs, insemination and tom milking techniques, and working towards the production of top quality eggs while respecting company standards, government regulations, and the highest bio-security standards.

Poultry Manager

Poultry managers are responsible for maintaining and cleaning barns, for setting up and looking after the raising of chicks, pressure washing and some heavy lifting. Communication, decision making and problem solving skills will be required.

General Labourer / Equestrian

On a horse farm a general labourer performs a variety of duties including some of the following: routine cleaning and maintenance of barn, feeding and watering, administering medication under the supervision of barn manager, lead training yearlings in the walking ring, grooming and cleaning of horses, hoof care, assistance with breeding programs, assistance with foaling, care of pregnant mares and foals.

Reproduction / Foaling Labourer

Worker will perform general duties related to horse breeding, handling, grooming, hoof care, including collecting stallions. Understand mare cycles and perform insemination. Assisting with foaling, understand when to call for assistance. Operation of farm equipment (bobcat, tractor etc.) where necessary for cleaning and feeding.

General Labourer

his position, depending on farm and length of time, may include a variety of general chores such as: clean-up of calf barns, raking freestalls, general yard clean-up, weed control, haying, forage harvesting, rock picking, building and barn maintenance, painting, basic carpentry, and field work (tractor). These jobs may lead to other full-time positions on the farm or ranch depending on the willingness to work and attitude.

Farrow to Finish Production Technician

Regular maintenance of routine clean-up, waste handling, feeding, watering, moving swine, weaning, monitoring weight gains. Swine Health, i.e., performing routine health inspections and recognizing signs of disorder, handling and possibly administering medications and vaccines, recognizing related farrowing problems and providing assistance.

Herdsperson & Pork Production Supervisor

This position would be responsible for the following: identification and description of farm production goals and communication of goals to all staff; regular monitoring of animal needs, pig flow, work schedules and emergency responses; water, feed and food quality, humidity, air flow, pig; following key rules of pig production with respect to loading and unloading – temperature and light, reduce stress at all stages, awareness of disease transferring potential and identification of common disorders and diseases; provide regular upkeep of equipment and buildings, demonstrate effective and safe equipment operation.

Harvester and Pruner

Harvesting positions may include, lettuce, cucumbers, tomatoes, peppers, etc. For example, cucumbers are picked daily and then graded, wrapped and boxed. The vines are pruned to an amount of fruit by the pruner. Seasonal employment depending on crop, February to November.

Technical Greenhouse Production Officer

Working under a Manager a production officer operates the boiler, irrigation systems and climate control computers which monitor the climate and humidity within a greenhouse. A greenhouse production officer will be responsible for meeting the production, optimizing growing conditions, maintenance of irrigation systems, monitoring and adjustment of nutrition in rootzone, pest and disease identification. running technical trials, plant propagation, pollination.

Mechanical and Electrical Technician

Major duties include the maintenance of all greenhouse equipment, maintaining and storing adequate supplies of all general and maintenance materials, receiving deliveries, maintaining buildings, roads and yard, loading and driving of produce when required, investigating, planning and implementation of new equipment. Employment is usually full-time, year round.

Greenhouse Production Manager

Management of the total greenhouse operation. Major duties are to: meet production and financial targets, organize full time and part time labour as well as harvest crews. The Production Manager is technical management, training, manage all aspects of the greenhouse environment. Employment is full-time, year round.

Grain Field Crop Technician & General Labourer

Many “technician” positions require both operation, routine service, and maintenance of all farm equipment. Duties include operation and routine service of seeding equipment, the handling and storage of liquid and dry fertilizers, operation of swather in fields and on roads, operation of moisture testing equipment and combine, identification of signs of weed infestations and the practice of techniques to minimize introduction and spread of weeds.

Flower Harvester (Outside and Greenhouse)

General labour picking outside daffodils, tulips, or bulbs. Seasonal employment from 2 – 6 weeks depending on weather conditions. Could start as early as mid February and end as late as June or July for bulbs. Inside harvest for greenhouse grown flowers, season varies depending on crop.

Greenhouse Floriculture Assistant

Working in a floriculture greenhouse, these positions may involve different aspects of floriculture. The individuals may also be required to assist with flower cutting and grafting roses under supervision; plant maintenance and planting are also specific tasks. May also include other duties in a greenhouse such as operating irrigation systems and manipulation of plant environment. Full time seasonal positions, starting May until Labour Day Weekend.
