Toxicologist
Catherine Italiano lives and works in the city, but her job focuses on farms. As a toxicologist, she studies “livestock feed”; the food given to farm animals. Her job is to make sure the food is safe for animals, for any humans who eat meat, milk or eggs from those animals and for the environment.
Animal Care Technician
Catherine Bone never wanted a desk job. She’s happy every morning putting on heavy rubber boots to go to work, where she keeps 30 000 salmon healthy so that her company, Aqua Health, can test experimental vaccines on them.
General Farm Worker (Laying Operation / Hatchery)
Daily routines include feeding, watering, daily collection of hatching eggs and the overseeing of the breeding flock. Workers monitor feed inventory, maintain standards of efficiency and bio-security, maintain and update flock records and statistics, implement health programs, and are familiar with WHIMIS regulations.
Turkey Farm Technician
Will be responsible for all aspects of the turkey growing operation, including: operating, maintaining and repairing all poultry farm equipment, care of flock, checking water, feed, culling, record keeping, and reporting results.
Supervisor Turkey Breeder
The manager/supervisor works under the Director of Operations supervising all aspects of turkey hatching egg production. Job duties include implementing vaccination and health programs, insemination and tom milking techniques, and working towards the production of top quality eggs while respecting company standards, government regulations, and the highest bio-security standards.
Poultry Manager
Poultry managers are responsible for maintaining and cleaning barns, for setting up and looking after the raising of chicks, pressure washing and some heavy lifting. Communication, decision making and problem solving skills will be required.
Reproduction / Foaling Labourer
Worker will perform general duties related to horse breeding, handling, grooming, hoof care, including collecting stallions. Understand mare cycles and perform insemination. Assisting with foaling, understand when to call for assistance. Operation of farm equipment (bobcat, tractor etc.) where necessary for cleaning and feeding.
General Labourer
his position, depending on farm and length of time, may include a variety of general chores such as: clean-up of calf barns, raking freestalls, general yard clean-up, weed control, haying, forage harvesting, rock picking, building and barn maintenance, painting, basic carpentry, and field work (tractor). These jobs may lead to other full-time positions on the farm or ranch depending on the willingness to work and attitude.
Farrow to Finish Production Technician
Regular maintenance of routine clean-up, waste handling, feeding, watering, moving swine, weaning, monitoring weight gains. Swine Health, i.e., performing routine health inspections and recognizing signs of disorder, handling and possibly administering medications and vaccines, recognizing related farrowing problems and providing assistance.
Herdsperson & Pork Production Supervisor
This position would be responsible for the following: identification and description of farm production goals and communication of goals to all staff; regular monitoring of animal needs, pig flow, work schedules and emergency responses; water, feed and food quality, humidity, air flow, pig; following key rules of pig production with respect to loading and unloading – temperature and light, reduce stress at all stages, awareness of disease transferring potential and identification of common disorders and diseases; provide regular upkeep of equipment and buildings, demonstrate effective and safe equipment operation.
Dairy Herdsperson
Duties include: ordering of supplies and feed, day to day management of the herd, complete record keeping, pedigree records, herd health records and breeding , monitoring of milk records according to feed rationing and adjustment updating of computer feeders. The Herdsman will also perform artificial insemination (AI) in consultation with owner, and arrange regular herd health visits with a veterinarian. Herdsperson may supervise or perform 2 milkings a day.
Irrigator (Seasonal)
Irrigators change hand and wheel irrigation lines several times a day depending on the acreage of the ranch operation. Irrigator is required to either drive or ride a motorcycle to change irrigation lines. Help with haying when necessary, equipment operation for harvest may be required. Irrigator position may include a variety of other chores such as barn cleaning, pen cleaning, assistance with moving cattle, assistance in changing irrigation lines, weed control, yard clean up, land clearing, haying, rock picking and fence repair.
Ranch Hand – Cowgirl or Cowboy
Working under the direction of a Ranch Foreman or Ranch Owner, main duties include: feeding and tending livestock, operation and maintenance of farm machinery, cleaning barns and pens, branding, and dehorning, fenceline (repair) and rangeland patrol either on motorcycle, horse, or truck, planting, irrigating and harvesting crops.
Ranch Foreman
The Foreman runs day to day operation of the ranch. Tasks include: supervision of ranch employees, basic accounting, livestock feeding, maintaining high quality herd health, breeding programs, branding, operation and maintenance of farm machinery and equipment. During calving season heifers (first time mothers) and cows require 24 hour monitoring, shift work shared by all employees.
Animal Health Technologist
Many Animal Health Technologists will be found working in a private veterinary clinic where they generally enjoy a variety of responsibilities. However, because of the diversity of training and skills, an Animal Health Technologist may be employed in many other areas of the animal health industry
Agricultural Engineering Associates
Agricultural Engineering Associates was formed to fill the void for technical engineering services at the production agriculture grassroots.
Swine Breeding Technician
Usually employed by medium- to large-sized sow farrow to finish operations, swine breeding technicians are involved in many aspects of the pork production operation. Often, work will involve everything from repairing equipment to management of grower and finisher hogs to other related administrative duties.

Members of the Alberta Pork Producers Alliance (APPA) have defined the following job classification and wage guidelines for employment in the Alberta Pork Industry. The job definitions listed, although they are only guidelines, may assist the pork industry in matching job titles with the Human Resources and Skills Development Canada (HRSDC) National Occupation Codes (NOC).
