The Beef Information Centre (BIC) is the Beef Market Development division of the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association. BIC uses an integrated approach, focusing programs on five key areas – improving the quality & consistency of beef; increasing beef’s convenience; expanding the use and value of all cuts; improving food safety; and improving consumers’ perceptions about beef’s healthfulness and wholesomeness.

Highland Feeders Limited
Highland Feeders Limited, originally Highland View Farms, was officially incorporated in 1976 by Jack Kotelko and his sons, Bern and Mike, and operated as a mixed grain and purebred cattle farm. Already a successful purebred cattle operation, the Company expanded its land base, becoming one of the larger grain farmers in the area.

Milker (Dairy)
Duties include: milking herd, equipment sanitation, cleaning of milking parlour, feeding under direction of Herdsperson or Owner, care of young stock, barn cleaning (tractor), heat detection, record keeping, disorder identification, machine operation. If the position is exclusively milking work is often divided into a morning and evening shift. The Milker’s day may average between 5 and 10 hours a day depending on herd size, ability and farm.

Dairy Herdsperson
Duties include: ordering of supplies and feed, day to day management of the herd, complete record keeping, pedigree records, herd health records and breeding , monitoring of milk records according to feed rationing and adjustment updating of computer feeders. The Herdsman will also perform artificial insemination (AI) in consultation with owner, and arrange regular herd health visits with a veterinarian. Herdsperson may supervise or perform 2 milkings a day.

Farm Equipment Mechanic
Working safely and demonstrate care of farm equipment, safety devices and features. Perform and communicate a practical understanding of farm truck road and travel regulations, and communicate to other employees. Routine servicing (trouble shoot), repair and daily maintenance and operation all equipment, which may include: augers, conveyors, feed mixing equipment, silage blowers, silo unloading equipment and so on.

Equipment Operator
General farm chores include: scraping barns, providing bedding to free stalls and calf pens, daily safety inspection of equipment. Field work includes preparation for seeding, manure spreading and/or fertilizing, harvest work (i.e. forage, haying), driving forage (1 ton and over) truck. May require regular maintenance of equipment and barns, milking equipment, dairy yard, field and equipment maintenance.

Irrigator (Seasonal)
Irrigators change hand and wheel irrigation lines several times a day depending on the acreage of the ranch operation. Irrigator is required to either drive or ride a motorcycle to change irrigation lines. Help with haying when necessary, equipment operation for harvest may be required. Irrigator position may include a variety of other chores such as barn cleaning, pen cleaning, assistance with moving cattle, assistance in changing irrigation lines, weed control, yard clean up, land clearing, haying, rock picking and fence repair.

Ranch Hand – Cowgirl or Cowboy
Working under the direction of a Ranch Foreman or Ranch Owner, main duties include: feeding and tending livestock, operation and maintenance of farm machinery, cleaning barns and pens, branding, and dehorning, fenceline (repair) and rangeland patrol either on motorcycle, horse, or truck, planting, irrigating and harvesting crops.

Ranch Foreman
The Foreman runs day to day operation of the ranch. Tasks include: supervision of ranch employees, basic accounting, livestock feeding, maintaining high quality herd health, breeding programs, branding, operation and maintenance of farm machinery and equipment. During calving season heifers (first time mothers) and cows require 24 hour monitoring, shift work shared by all employees.

The Alberta Cattle Feeders’ Association (ACFA) is a commerce organization that represents the interests of its members on a broad range of government policies and economic issues which impact the competitiveness of the production of beef and beef products in the province.
