Calgary Food Policy Council

The Calgary Food Policy Council is comprised of individuals from all aspects of our local food system. The goal is to provide a forum for advocacy and policy development that works towards the creation of a food system that is ecologically sustainable, economically viable and socially just.

Food Engineering Magazine

Food Engineering has been covering the food and beverage industry since 1928. Published 12 times per year, this magazine reports on the latest trends, products, technologies and issues affecting manufacturing in the food and beverage industry.

Norwest Labs

Norwest Labs is a full-service analytical testing laboratory. They have 12 locations around the world with nine labs located in Canada. Norwest Labs provide a comprehensive list of agriculture, food, environment and energy testing services.

Animal Nutrition Association of Canada

The Animal Nutrition Association of Canada (ANAC) is the national trade association for Canada’s feed industry. ANAC’s 180 member companies manufacture livestock and poultry feed and supply grains, oilseed meals, micro-ingredients and other commodity and related services to the industry.

Milker (Dairy)

Duties include: milking herd, equipment sanitation, cleaning of milking parlour, feeding under direction of Herdsperson or Owner, care of young stock, barn cleaning (tractor), heat detection, record keeping, disorder identification, machine operation. If the position is exclusively milking work is often divided into a morning and evening shift. The Milker’s day may average between 5 and 10 hours a day depending on herd size, ability and farm.

Industrial Meat Cutter

Industrial meat cutters use knives and specialized equipment to cut, bone and trim meats into a variety of cuts for domestic and international markets. Working with a stringent food safety system, they may work in a particular department performing a specific task or work on a variety of tasks.

Alberta HACCP Advantage (AHA!)

Alberta HACCP Advantage ( AHA! ) is a program established by Alberta Agriculture and Food (AAF), in cooperation with Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, to recognize HACCP systems implemented by Alberta food processors. Enrollment is by application and is voluntary.

SAIT’s Retail Meat Cutting Program

SAIT’s Retail Meat Cutting program provides students with the comprehensive theoretical and practical knowledge of meat handling, processing, sanitation and management skills required for entry into Alberta’s rapidly growing retail meat cutting trade. Students receive extensive hands on training in the preparation of beef, pork, poultry, lamb and fish in accordance to the retail meat industry’s standards.

University of Alberta, AFNS

The first university department of its kind in North America, AFNS offers programs that integrate teaching and research in plant science, animal science, bioresource engineering, food science and nutrition. No other department in the world offers such a broad range of interdisciplinary interests and skills.

Inspection Laboratory Technician

Ensuring that Canada’s foods, plants, and animals are healthy and safe is a key part of working as an inspection lab technician. Usually employed by government agencies, a tech might be involved in examining food (both human and animal) for signs of contaminants such as bacteria or chemicals, testing animal populations for disease through blood and serum analysis, examining water samples for contamination from organisms or chemicals, or tracking plants (both wild and crop) for pests or other destructive infestations.

Quality Assurance Manager

“A Quality Assurance (QA) Manager ensures the safety and quality of all processes and products within a production facility,” explains Monique Keultjes at FNA Foods Inc. Quality assurance managers need strong interpersonal, communication and organizational skills. A broad base of knowledge in chemistry, microbiology and statistical analysis is important, as well as the ability to think creatively and find solutions, often under tight timelines and stressful conditions.
