Canadian Food Industry Council
The Canadian Food Industry Council was incorporated in November 2003 and is a not for profit organization. Business, labour, and government representatives joined together with the Department of Human Resources and Skills Development to identify industry-wide challenges, and implement long-term solutions.

Edmonton Downtown Farmers’ Market
The City Market is run by the Edmonton Downtown Farmers’ Market Association, a non-profit society made up of City Market vendors and community stakeholders.

Auctioneer
The auctioneer is the agent of the seller. His job is to obtain the best price possible for an item. Auctioneers who are members of professional associations such as the Auctioneers Association of Canada are bound by a Code of Ethics that also spells out their duty to protect the public against fraud, misrepresentation or unethical practices with respect to items being presented at an auction.

Sekura Auctions
Sekura Auctions employs between fourteen and twenty employees for each sale and offers its customers a wide variety of services. Services available include branding, vaccinating, trucking and order buying. In order to improve the efficiency of invoicing and settlement cheques, the office was computerized in 1991.

Provost Livestock Exchange
Provost Livestock Exchange is located in the progressive town of Provost, Alberta, which is 85 miles south of Lloydminster. Provost Livestock Exchange handles over 90,000 head of cattle a year, and the seven field men cover the market needs of Eastern Alberta and Western Saskatchewan.

Nilsson Bros. Livestock Exchange, Vermilion
Nilsson Bros has been operating in Vermilion since 1988 and handles over 150,000 head of cattle a year through the ring. With eight fieldmen, the auction company covers much of Northeast Alberta and Northwest Saskatchewan.

Grande Prairie Livestock Market
Grande Prairie Livestock Market is a livestock marketing facility which sells over 70,000 head of livestock annually. Regular sales are held every Wednesday. Special cow and calf sales are held throughout the fall and spring.

Nilsson Bros. Inc. – Clyde
Nilsson Bros. Inc. – Clyde is the largest cattle auction market in Canada. Located 65 km north of Edmonton, Alberta, in the center of the highest concentration of Cow-Calf pairs per acre in Canada, Nilsson’s thirteen field reps look after the market needs of all of northern Alberta, northeastern British Columbia, and parts of northern Saskatchewan.

Canadian Satellite Livestock Auction
Canadian Satellite Livestock Auction (CSLA) started operation in October 1993. It is owned by Vold Jones & Vold Auction Co. Ltd and The Auction Company Ltd. CSLA offers livestock producers the advantage of North American buyer access combined with the local participating market.

Balog Auction Services
Headquartered at Lethbridge in southern Alberta, Balog Auction Service is a livestock auction market with over 1.4 million head of cattle sold. Feeder and fat beef cattle, dairy, slaughter and purebred cattle are professionally handled, sorted, sold and shipped out to buyers through the Balog Auction markets modern cattle handling facilities at Lethbridge and Tompkins, Saskatchewan.

Product Marketing Manager
Aaron Mitchell is a marketing manager for Monsanto Canada inc.’s agricultural division. Usually, marketing means getting people to buy as much as possible, but the product that Aaron is trying to sell changes all the rules. Monsanto’s product, a seed with genetically built-in herbicide resistance, reproduces itself! So while selling seeds to farmers, Aaron has to make sure they don’t just use the seeds they buy to make more of their own. That would put Monsanto out of business.

Sod Farm Equipment Operator / Truck Driver
Working under the Sod Farm Manager the equipment operator plants and harvests the sod crop at the direction of the estimator using heavy equipment such as a bobcat or skid steer loader.

Estimator (Nursery)
A turf or landscape estimator will work in conjunction with a commercial sod farm operation specializing in the knowledge of turf horticulture and product pricing or in other areas of nursery trades. The estimator will have a thorough knowledge of turf markets, soil and climate, water availability, equipment technology, and offer consultation on appropriate turf varieties.

Assistant Retail Sales Manager
Assistant managers are responsible for customer service, maintenance care and identification of plants, shrubs, and perennials, ordering, receiving, and organization of retail displays. Individuals will take direction from the Retail Sales Manager and must monitor and understand all aspects of the retail nursery operation, including: scheduling and hiring of workers in coordination with the manager, identification of plant pests and disease, and executing designated customer services.

Nursery Worker & Order Processor
Duties include filling packing slips with quality plant material and other shipping duties, requires a general knowledge of plant identification, shrubs, and perennials including watering, planting, pruning, and customer service. Depending on the nursery may require fork lift or tractor operation.

Farm Direct Marketing Assistant
Consumers demand high quality horticultural products. Production methods are becoming increasingly sophisticated. Direct farm markets provide a direct link with the customer. As a result growers need highly skilled workers with good communication and customer service skills, looking after production and quality control on the farm. Growers need workers with a future looking mindset, who may be computer proficient, independent thinkers, and who possess good technical , communication, and decision making skills.

Sales Manager
A sales manager is as much analyst as seller. He or she must know all the company’s products and their potential in the marketplace. This means an in depth knowledge of the company’s processed, capabilities and products. It also means analyzing the market, looking for opportunities which could mean increased sales for the company. It also means knowing the consumers and their preferences. This ability to spot trends and consumer wants is critical to the future of the company.
