A relatively new technology that is being quickly applied to agriculture and food production in Alberta is the use of mapping technology, known as Geographic Information Systems, or GIS. After all, agriculture and food production are both about using the land and moving goods around the province, country, and even the world. We wanted to see how some of this technology was being applied in real operations, so we spoke with Greg Stamp, of Stamp Seeds located in Enchant Alberta, just north of Lethbridge. Greg is a recent graduate of the University of Lethbridge, and did a specialization in mapping and GIS.

The Lacombe Research Centre, a research centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, is located in the town of Lacombe in central Alberta between the two large cities of Edmonton and Calgary, approximately 23 km north of Red Deer.

Toxicologist

Catherine Italiano lives and works in the city, but her job focuses on farms. As a toxicologist, she studies “livestock feed”; the food given to farm animals. Her job is to make sure the food is safe for animals, for any humans who eat meat, milk or eggs from those animals and for the environment.

Take an onion and crush it. What do you get? At a place called SABIC (Saskatchewan Agricultural Biotechnology Information Centre), by adding a few simple ingredients, you get the onion’s DNA. The onion-crushing experiment is part of SABIC’s programme to educate people about biotechnology.

Environmental Field Technician

Jason Chiasson rarely sees the inside of an office; he’s too busy in the field, where the action is. As field technician for Geobac Technology Group, a company that specialises in decontaminating soil and groundwater, Jason’s job is supervising the team that cleans up environmental messes such as oil and gas spills.

Research and Development Manager

Back in 1970s, greenhouse growers in British Columbia began to realise that some of the chemical pesticides they were using were dangerous. They called Agriculture Canada, who started looking for alternatives. Agriculture Canada handed the problem over to Don Elliott, an entomologist (insect scientist). Don is an expert in developing beneficials, insects that act as natural pesticides themselves by killing insects that eat commercially-grown plants and vegetables. They are possibly the most environmentally friendly pesticides on the planet!

A passion for plants, developed as a young girl working for relatives in a nursery, led Julie Brais to choose a biotechnology career. Today, she works as a research technician for Performance Plants, a company working on projects such as improving crops’ cold and frost resistance and genetically altering them to increase their yield.
