University of Calgary, Department of Biological Sciences

We are a large department, with nearly sixty professors and instructors unified by the common goal of excellence in the discovery and dissemination of knowledge in the life sciences.

University of Lethbridge, Bachelor of Science, Agricultural Biotechnology

Students enrolled in the Agricultural Biotechnology program are offered the opportunity to study agriculture in lab-extensive programs that provide excellent practical experience with special emphasis on issues, research, and courses related and relevant to agriculture.

The Lacombe Research Centre, a research centre of Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada, is located in the town of Lacombe in central Alberta between the two large cities of Edmonton and Calgary, approximately 23 km north of Red Deer.

Catherine Bone never wanted a desk job. She’s happy every morning putting on heavy rubber boots to go to work, where she keeps 30 000 salmon healthy so that her company, Aqua Health, can test experimental vaccines on them.

Reproduction technology has always fascinated Daniel Bousquet. “It’s amazing to be able to create a new being, to manipulate life.” Trained as a veterinarian, he now works as Director of Research and Development for L’Alliance Boviteq, a small company specialising in bovine reproduction.

Research Technician

As a research technician, Stefanie has to show people who use the lab (there are about 10) how to use the equipment. Laboratory equipment can be pretty complex — and in the field of biochemistry, like all sciences, it is getting more sophisticated and hi-tech every day. In Stefanie’s experience, even Ph.D. students need someone to explain how the machinery works! In her supervisory role, Stefanie also helps her colleagues with research problems, opens mail, and generally keeps the lab running smoothly.

David Cameron makes his living from yeast. He doesn’t bake bread or brew beer. He helps a company called Tembec Inc. use yeast to create alcohol from wood.

The National Research Council (NRC)

The National Research Council (NRC) is the Government of Canada’s premier organization for research and development and is composed of over twenty institutes and national programs, spanning a wide variety of disciplines and offering a broad array of services. Offices are located in every province in Canada and play a major role in stimulating community-based innovation.

Central Experimental Farm

Canada is the only country to have a working farm in the heart of its capital: the Central Experimental Farm, established in 1886 as the central research station for the federal Department of Agriculture. The Farm continues that scientific focus as the location for laboratories and research plots for the Eastern Cereal and Oilseed Research Centre.

Biotechnology Research Institute

The Biotechnology Research Institute of the National Research Council Canada (NRC-BRI) is the largest Canadian research facility devoted to biotechnology. Located in Montreal, the Institute promotes, assists and conducts leading-edge research and development in the fields of health, bioprocess and environment.

Alberta Agricultural Research Institute

The Alberta Agricultural Research Institute (AARI) is the primary agency in Alberta for funding, coordinating and promoting strategic agricultural initiatives in research, development and technology transfer for the agriculture and agri-food sector.

The Lakeland Agricultural Research Association (LARA) conducts applied agricultural research and extension programs throughout Lakeland County and the M.D. of Bonnyville to achieve a profitable and sustainable future for producers by linking all members of the agricultural community.

Chinook Applied Research Association

Chinook Applied Research Association (CARA) is a producer-directed society dedicated to expanding agricultural research and demonstration activity. We provide a link in the transfer of technology between research and the producer. Producers, industry, government and others can access reliable data on crop, livestock and soils projects that is relevant to the area and its soil climatic conditions.

Battle River Research Group

Each year the Battle River Research Group (BRRG) conducts a wide range of applied research agronomy projects. Our major areas of emphasis are forage and livestock projects, direct seeding, herbicide evaluation, variety demonstrations, and special crops.
